Exam centre or remote invigilation?

14 April 2021

Last week ICAEW announced that, subject to the planned government roadmap, all Pearson Vue owned test centres in the UK will re-open and it is anticipated that the July Case Study exam will be available in an exam centre.

ICAEW recognise that this, while great news for some, does not cover all students – especially international students where the exam centre reopening is still uncertain. As such, remote invigilation will remain available for all exam levels.

Deciding what is best for you

As governments across the globe build their own roadmaps, you will need to regularly monitor and review the situation to make an informed decision about where you will sit your exam.

Ask yourself:

1. What are your options?

Your choice will be controlled in some part by the restrictions in place in your country. Keep checking the guidelines to determine whether the exam centres will be open.

2. Which environment is less stressful for you?

Many of our students felt calmer not having to travel to an exam centre and factoring in potential delays that could cause them to miss their exam. Others find that the potential for distractions at home or the pressure of administering their own exam make a calm exam environment impossible. You need to consider how you can monitor and control your emotional wellbeing when adhering to the guidelines for remote invigilation. If you are unsure, take a look at this article where a Learning Technologist shares her insight into sitting a Proctored exam.

3. Do you have the technology and web connection to support remote invigilation?

Technology and a stable internet connection play a major part in whether remote invigilation may even be possible for you.

4. Have you any questions about how remote invigilation works?

Spend some time going through the FAQs for remote invigilation on the ICAEW website.

5. Do you know the deadlines?

The July booking window opens Monday 24 May at 10am (UK time). Places are issued on a first come, first served basis so you must book early – especially if you are wanting to sit your exam in a centre.

It may feel like a long way off and a lot of work right now, but focus on the end goal. This could be the last exam you sit before unlocking your dream career.

Be prepared and make an informed choice.
